What is a QR code?
These codes are called QR (Quick Response) codes, and they were originally designed for tracking parts in the automotive industry. With mobiles that are capable of reading these codes becoming ever more popular, people are starting to see that they can use these codes as a shortcut way of quickly accessing pages on the internet. Due to this, QR codes are now popping up all over the place: on billboards and buses, on real estate signs, and on business cards. Inventory tracking is, however, where the codes really shine: used well, they can be a great tool to organise all your materials and products.
How does a QR code work?
Essentially, the codes are not overly complicated: the dotty squares are simply a coded representation of a normal URL you type into a browser. As you can't read it in its coded state, you need to have an app that is capable of scanning and then translating the QR code into a normal URL.
How do I scan a QR code?
- Ensure you have a QR Code Reader App installed on your smartphone
- Open your app, then when prompted, point your camera at the printed QR code and wait until the app scans and recognises the code.
- The app should then load your material page automatically.
Can I scan my own product barcodes instead?
No. Stocksmith's QR codes aren't the same as the UPC or EAN barcodes already printed on your packaging by a manufacturer. Each QR code is generated by Stocksmith itself when you print a tracking label, and it links straight back to that item's page in your account. It isn't reading a barcode value at all.
Stocksmith doesn't currently read or import data from existing UPC or EAN barcodes. To scan an item and open its page, print and use a Stocksmith-generated tracking label instead.
